Jamie Whincup’s 2021 season marked the final chapter of one of the greatest full-time driving careers in Supercars history. Having already secured a record seven Drivers’ Championships, Whincup entered the year knowing it would be his last as a full-time competitor before stepping into the leadership of Triple Eight Race Engineering. It was not simply a farewell season, however. He remained fiercely competitive and determined to finish his career at the front of the field.
Throughout the year, Whincup continued to demonstrate the consistency, racecraft and professionalism that had defined his career. Against an exceptionally strong season from teammate Shane van Gisbergen, he remained a regular contender for podiums and victories and kept himself firmly in the championship fight.
Whincup ultimately finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship, completing a one-two result for Triple Eight. Although an eighth title was out of reach, his performance showed that even at the end of his full-time career, he remained one of the category’s leading competitors.
The season concluded at the Bathurst 1000, where Whincup shared the car with long-time teammate Craig Lowndes. The pair finished fourth, bringing Whincup’s remarkable full-time career to a close at the circuit where he had achieved so much. He was also inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame during the Bathurst weekend, recognising a career that had reshaped the record books.
The 2021 season was therefore less about a single final triumph and more about the lasting standard Whincup had established. He retired from full-time competition as a seven-time champion, four-time Bathurst winner and one of the most successful drivers in Australian motorsport history, finishing his final campaign as championship runner-up and helping deliver another dominant season for Triple Eight.
