The Red Bull Racing Australia team has rounded out the weekend with a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix.
In an action-packed final race that saw yet another bull fight at the front of the pack with newcomers Volvo, Lowndesy finished second, leaving him in second position overall for the weekend.
“It was quite an interesting race with everyone letting their hair down because it’s the last race of the weekend,” laughed Lowndesy.
“There was a bit of carnage but we managed to stay out of it. Our car pace wasn’t quite as good as yesterday but it’s one of those things when you make adjustments to the car that don’t quite pan out, but we’ve learnt a lot.”
The top step of the podium was filled by Scott McLaughlin in the No.33 Volvo.
“Congratulations to Scotty and Gary Rogers, they did a great job today with a fast car. It’s great to be able to leave Albert Park with second place and a straight car,” said Craig afterwards.
On the other side of the garage though the crew wasn’t quite so lucky, as the No.1 Holden missed out on capitalising on the best speed they’d had all weekend when Jamie was taken out in the late stages of the 12-lap race.
“We had much better pace today so we could actually race and we were going alright,” J-Dub said.
“My priority was to keep the car straight. The race settled in, we were in a good position and the car felt good but then things got spiced up with the safety car caused by Todd Kelly stopping on track.
“I was on the inside of Moffat and I could see the crash behind and there was nothing I could do about it. I knew Rick Kelly was going to hit me about four seconds before it happened but I had Moffat on my outside and there was nowhere I could go, I was a sitting duck. It was only small impact on the rear which we should be able to fix up pretty fast.
“I was happy with the weekend all in all. Sometimes a challenging weekend is a good one because you learn a lot from it but I believe we’re in good place to continue moving forward.”
Jamie finished 11th overall for the event and he, Craig and the rest of the Red Bull Racing Australia team will be hitting the track again in Tasmania in two weeks’ time.
