Jamie Whincup entered the 2020 Supercars season determined to add an eighth championship to his remarkable career. Whincup made the perfect start in Adelaide, claiming pole position and victory in the opening race of the season. The win carried extra significance, making him the most successful Holden driver in Supercars history with 86 victories for the brand, surpassing longtime teammate Craig Lowndes. Later in the season, he reached another remarkable milestone, becoming just the eighth driver in Supercars history to make 500 championship starts—a testament to both his longevity and sustained success at the highest level. Together, the achievements further cemented his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
As the season resumed, Scott McLaughlin again set the benchmark, but Whincup consistently kept himself in the fight. His experience and race craft regularly delivered podium finishes and valuable championship points, while victories at Darwin, Townsville and Sydney Motorsport Park ensured he remained among the category’s leading performers throughout the season.
The endurance season brought one of the most anticipated driver pairings in recent Bathurst history as Craig Lowndes returned to partner Whincup in the iconic #888 Holden. The combination immediately became one of the favourites, but their campaign came to a heartbreaking end on lap 33 when Whincup made an uncharacteristic mistake at The Cutting while attempting an overtake. The heavy crash ended their race and any hopes of adding another Bathurst crown, with Whincup immediately accepting responsibility for the incident.
Whincup ultimately finished fourth in the 2020 Supercars Championship with four race victories, 14 podiums and six pole positions. While an eighth championship proved elusive, the season once again highlighted his consistency, resilience and ability to perform at the highest level, further strengthening his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest competitors.
