Supreme Saturday for Red Bull Racing Australia

RED Bull Racing Australia duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes have stamped their authority on Texas, finishing one-two respectively in both opening races in Austin, USA.

The Red Bull duo led home Fabian Coulthard in races one and two on debut in the United States, Whincup extending his lead in the V8 Supercars championship after becoming the first driver to win a race on American soil.

Lowndes challenged for the lead in both races, narrowly finishing second to the reigning champion at the Circuit of the Americas and clawing himself within 14 points of Will Davison and second in the championship race.

The Red Bull VF Commodores led from start to finish in races one and two, posting the team’s second and third consecutive one-two finishes after dominating in Perth.

“The cars are very good,” said Whincup, who has now won 18 of V8 Supercars’ 26 international races.

“Lowndesy stepped up again like he did in Perth and made it a real fight there for me. We had our work cut out for us. He came at us a fair bit at different stages of the race and we were able to just hold him off. I thought he was going to mow us down there for a bit but Dutto (engineer Mark Dutton) and the team did a great job and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the weekend, especially with the heat. They’re not joking when they talk about the hot Texas sun. It’s crazy hot over here and that was top-five all-time for heat inside the car.”

Race two marked Whincup’s 69th career win and fifth of the season. It was also Red Bull Racing Australia’s fourth one-two finish in five races.

A true testament of the team’s pace was the fact the Red Bulls gapped third place-getter Coulthard by more than eight seconds in the first race and more than 10 seconds in the second.

“It’s been fantastic on a track we’re still learning,” Lowndes said.

“Our cars have been sensational. I had a good fight with Jamie that time and I had the car to battle with him. It’s a credit to the team and to JJ (engineer Jeromy Moore). We didn’t quite have the car in race one but we had it in race two.

“It was a very satisfying finish in race two and the cars are just getting better with every race. Bring on the next two races.”

Races three and four will be screened live on Seven Mate from 6am AEST on Monday.

Both will be 100km over 27 laps with compulsory tyre stops.
