SVG’s tick of approval

Heading into the Bathurst 1000 co-driving with Shane Van Gisbergen, and with just one previous start in the Great Race, would have some up in sweats…

Not for young Matty Campbell, or SVG for that matter.

As Matty Campbell buckles in for his second Bathurst 1000, SVG is more than happy with his young protégé pairing with him.

“He’s got an old head on young shoulders and he’s obviously very mature for his age – and done a lot of racing,” said van Gisbergen.

“He’s only done the Supercars one season, but he did a very good job last year which is why we brought him along. There are no worries in that department.”

Matty Campbell has starred this year in his rookie Porsche Supercup season, sitting third in the championship on the back of two wins.

“I’ve kept an eye on him and seen his racing skills and performances and stuff like that, but I’d never got to know him before now,” said SVG.

And despite placing 16th at last month’s Sandown 500, due to a late puncture, the duo were well placed throughout the race with Campbell maintaining his composure for a good stint of the race.

“Matty got in and did a great job, he didn’t lose too much time when the main guys got in and we were about eight seconds off the lead,” said van Gisbergen.

What will the Bathurst 1000 have in store for them? We’ll just have to hold on and sit tight!
