RED Bull Racing Australia drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes have claimed second and third respectively in the 51st Bathurst 1000.
After a nail-biting 161 laps, Whincup holds on to his V8 Supercars championship lead, ahead of teammate Craig Lowndes.
In a hotly contested race to be crowned King of the Mountain, Whincup took on arch Bathurst rival, Winterbottom , with Lowndes, Tander and Bright duelling it out for third.
From a pole position start, Whincup and co-driver Paul Dumbrell, had their Holden VF Commodore on the FPR driver’s tail until the very last lap.
“We gave it a red hot crack,“ Whincup said.
“I was able to start closing in on those final few laps then I saw an opportunity and went for it. And as it goes, it didn’t work out.
“Congratulations to the FPR team. Ford have been trying to take the Great Race out for a while now and today Frosty and Richards brought it home for them.
For Bathurst legend, Craig Lowndes, a podium finish was an apt way to celebrate his 20th start in the Great Race and 500th appearance in the ATCC/V8 Supercars series.
“As always, I’ve had a lot of fun out on the mountain,” Craig said.
“The battle with Bright and Tander in the final stages of the race kept me on my toes. But I’m glad that Luffy and I were able to bring home a podium finish for the team.”
The Gold Coast 600 will take place on 25 – 27th, October 13.
