The 2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship ended with a bang – no one could have scripted it better…
Red Bull Holden’s Jamie Whincup claimed his seventh Driver’s Championship and put his name in the history books, again.
But he wasn’t finished just yet…
Come Monday night, there was only one award that he had not yet achieved during his outstanding career in Supercars – and, in truth, it was one on which he hadn’t even set his sights.
It was the prestigious Driver’s Driver – the trophy that is somewhat a nod of respect from fellow drivers as they vote anonymously to recognise outstanding conduct.
The accolade was inaugurated in 2015 and taken out by our very own Shane “SVG” van Gisbergen in his maiden, and very successful, year with Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2016.
So after a consistent season on the track and an outstanding championship win, J-Dub took it home at the Supercars night of nights and was clearly chuffed after accepting the accolade.
“It’s a massive honour,” said J-Dub.
“To be respected by your peers is something else and it doesn’t get any better.”
“I mustn’t have punted too many people off this year to win it. I race hard and I’d like to think that I’m fair most of the time.
“But to be voted by the people out there shedding blood week in, week out, my peers, it’s great.”
So what’s next for J-Dub? Wouldn’t we all like to know…
