Lap record smashed and set to keep falling

WITH only two rounds to go, the four-way battle for the 2013 V8 Supercars championship title couldn’t be closer with just six points separating the Red Bull Racing Australia drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, just in front of Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison . However history may be on Lowndes’ side. The last time he was leading the championship with two rounds to go was 1999, the year of his last title.

With a newly resurfaced circuit, as predicted, the standing practice lap record set by Lowndes fell today with FPR’s Alex Davison clocking a 1min30.955. Lowndes finished up third behind Davison and Alex Premat respectively in the practice sessions noting that he was still searching for the flow of his VF Commodore.

“We were chasing the rear of the car for the two sessions and we still need to find the flow,” Lowndes said.

“The grip level here is remarkable, they’ve done a fantastic job on the circuit itself but it’s caught us all out a little bit because we’re still fine tuning. Times will still fall as more rubber goes down over the weekend.

“This weekend we can’t be too complacent about where we are in the championship with not only Jamie but also Frosty and Will. Both of those guys have been pushing hard and watching them in the times today they were in the top end of the timesheet for most of the two practice sessions.

Meanwhile teammate Jamie Whincup had a slower start to the day but was reassured by the progression of his VF Commodore and his times across the day.

“We rolled out of the truck very slow but managed to make some big improvements throughout the day which was encouraging,” Whincup said.

“We’re very thankful that we have another practice session tomorrow which is very rare for a Saturday so we’ll do our homework tonight and continue tuning the car. I’m confident that we can get there but it’s just going to be a long process.”

Practice for Race 32 begins at 10:30 AEDT with the 60/60 Super Sprint race kicking off at 15:45. To check out all the action head to www.v8superview.com.
