8:00pm We caught up with the drivers following the race and managed to catch a few words from them:
Jamie Whincup – Car #88
“It was an unbelievable day from where I stand! Does it get any better than that? We just felt robbed yesterday, we felt like we worked so hard and did so much to get ourselves within championship contention but we didn’t feel like we deserved that yesterday. Today, we just thought we had to go out there and do our job, and for things to fall our way. We feel like we’ve worked the hardest and we deserve it and there’s someone looking down on us and we got the ultimate result. Big thanks to my team and my teammates, they played a huge part today. Credit to the DJR Team Penske crew, they’ve been tough competition all year, but Scott (McLaughlin) will probably come back and win five or six championships of his own in the future.”
Shane van Gisbergen – Car #97
“It was a good day today. We always had a good qualifying car, we made some big changes that we hoped would help for the race. Qualifying was really cool, we were second by two thousandths and the shootout was the same, it was very close. We were happy with our car speed as we had been lacking in qualifying. The race was a huge improvement from yesterday. We had a pretty appalling day yesterday and we worked so hard overnight and turned up with three speedy race cars which was cool and I’m proud of us for turning that around. I watched that race unfold on the big screens, I let Jamie (Whincup) through and I was torn, Scotty (McLaughlin) is a good friend but I was just so happy to see everyone’s faces here and how hard we’ve worked this year. We turned our year around pace-wise, it’s been pretty amazing so I’m proud of everyone.”
About 5:40pm Jamie has come across the line in P1 and Scott (McLaughlin), at this stage was P11. We didn’t know the result until post-race when Scott was issued a penalty for a clash with Craig Lowndes. The highest of highs and lowest of lows.
5:02pm A couple of safety cars later and Jamie has taken P1, Shane sits in P2.
4:40pm Car 17 has a 15-second penalty for contact with car 78.
4:24pm Shane passes Reynolds to take P1 and Jamie is following close behind in P3.
