The crown has officially been placed on Jamie Whincup’s head, securing him as a record-breaking six-time V8 Supercars Champion.
The 2014 season finale was almost anti-climatic though as the heavens opened at the Sydney 500 yet again and a second consecutive race was red flagged due to the torrential conditions. However, unlike yesterday, today’s race was abandoned which left JDub in fourth and his Red Bull Racing Australia teammate, Lowndesy, in 17th.
“It was a weird end to the year but it was a great end to the year,” said an elated Jamie after he’d managed to find a dry pair of shoes.
“We’re good at bottling up our emotions because we have so many good things throughout the year but we put it to the side for this moment right now. I can’t wait to celebrate with the people that have made this happen being both my real family and my motorsports family.
“It’s been a tough grind this year right from the start and like always the crew dug deep and did what was required to be number one again. It’s unbelievable, it doesn’t matter what curveballs are thrown their way, they always manage to rise above it and finish on top, it’s inspirational.”
Craig, who was extremely sore after his qualifying crash yesterday, locked up a tyre on the first lap and dropped to last, before making his way back up the pack.
“It was always going to be an interesting weekend knowing that the forecast was going to be all over the place,” he said.
“It was a disappointing finish for us, I think we had a good opportunity to grab second in the championship but with the accident in qualifying on Saturday it really hurt us and me.
“Having said that, we did the best we could and I think the boys should be really happy with that. There’s a lot to celebrate over the next couple of weeks with taking out the Teams’ Championship and Jamie winning the Drivers’ Championship.”
And that’s a wrap for 2014!
