LIVE DIARY: PHILLIP ISLAND SATURDAY

1800 So there we have it, a race full of drama, we expect nothing less at Phillip Island. J-Dub had an epic battle with Scotty from passes to pit stops, it was nerve-racking! SVG lost his power steering at turn two of lap one so he had a HUGE road ahead of him – lucky for him he’s been training lately so his guns got him to the end. Here’s what they had to say after the race:

Jamie Whincup – Car #1
Qualifying Race 1 – Third (Fastest Time: 1:30.0523) *Started second due to car 12 grid penalty

“We just haven’t had the pace all weekend, there’s not other way to put it; we’re just not skinning the cat right. We were lacking pace in qualifying and lacking it in the race. We’re pushing as hard as we can, there’s a lot of elements to the car that are fantastic which are keeping us alive, we just have to do our job better to make the car faster. There are no parity issues, there’s no excuses, we just need to do our job better and we’ll work hard tonight and try and improve for tomorrow. I don’t feel we had the pace but we gave it everything, we pushed hard at the start, we had some cracking pit stops, we did everything we could to get the win but ultimately the quickest car won and that was the end of the day .

Shane van Gisbergen – Car #97
Qualifying Race 1 – Fourth (Fastest Time: 1:30.1799) *Started third due to car 12 grid penalty

“Qualifying was all in the first run, everyone did their best laps first and we waited until the end hoping for the track to get better and to save a set of tyres for the race but we had a little issue where we couldn’t get our lap out in time, which was a shame. The track was best at the start of qualifying so we ended up fourth which was alright. The start of the race was pretty exciting, I got a decent one; we were three wide into turn one and got held third, which was awesome, and then into turn two, the power steering had already failed. It was a long way from there, we were just battling the whole way but it is what it is.

1750 You can never have enough silverware… 😏

1545 Here we go… The race is about to start, here’s the view from where we are:

1420 Hold up… Car #12 has been disqualified from qualifying which means that we all move up one spot – revised order for the race today is J-Dub on the front row (woo!) in P2 and SVG will line-up in row two in P3 with our mate Lowndesy in P4.

1235 The grid for race 1 has been set! Jamie and Shane will be lining up side by side in 3rd and 4th. Triple Eight teammate, Craig is right behind them in 5th . We are in for an exciting race this afternoon.
