Live Diary: Winton Saturday 2018

1800 This is what they said…

Jamie Whincup – Car #1
Practice 3 – 24th (Fastest Time: 1:20.3629)
Qualifying Race 111th (Fastest Time: 1:19.5415)
Race 117th

“We made a big change for the race to try and find some speed and the car was definitely better, which is encouraging. We were very aggressive on the strategy and we were one of the first cars in so we were in a pretty good place until the front roll bar broke. We’re not exactly sure why but we were pretty wounded from thereon in.”

Shane van Gisbergen – Car #97
Practice 3 – 17th (Fastest Time: 1:20.0765)
Qualifying Race 1 – 14th (Fastest Time: 1:19.5703)
Race 1Third

“We thought we were making good inroads with the car in practice this morning but it wasn’t actually that good. When we put the new tyres on we thought we’d be good but we started further back than we would have liked to; all three cars struggled. In the race, we started from 14th and we just didn’t have the best pace at the start. Once people started to pit, we stayed out and started to drive up to the next car and then the next one, so that we had good pace in clear air. We just ran really long into the race and we were eventually faster than the cars who had new tyres. It shows it was the correct strategy, we probably wouldn’t have chosen that strategy if we started higher up. We did make a big change before the race so we made some good improvements but we need to start better tomorrow.”

1655 In a nutshell, J-Dub was one of the first to pit, SVG stayed out as one of the last to pit. Seems the SVG strategy worked as SVG started picking places as each car in the category made their stops. SVG makes his pit before a safety car regroups the field. J-Dub experiences some roll bar troubles while SVG takes P3 on the safety car restart.

1545 We’re heading out to the grid, strategy is going to play a big part in today’s race.

1300 Qualifying wasn’t our best today – J-Dub came through for P11 and SVG will start from P14. With a track like this, we’ve got a lot of work to do to get back to the top.

1240 Time to qualify!

1200

1120 Practice 3 was quite uneventful with a lot of work to do between now and qualifying. The boys just couldn’t get the setup they needed and J-Dub came through in P24, SVG in 17.

0915 An autograph session in 10 degrees… J-Dub was rocking the gloves while SVG’ opted for frozen fingers. Thanks for coming out and see you again tomorrow at 11:30am.
