Live Diary: Winton Sunday 2018

1600 A podium and a press conference done, we caught up with the drivers to see how their day panned out:

Jamie Whincup – Car #1
Qualifying Race 2 – Eighth (Fastest Time: 1:19.5575)
Race 2 – Eighth
Championship – Fifth (1,123 points)

“We fought hard inside the car, we had a good start but we were just caught up following cars the whole race. I think we were probably good for fourth or fifth quickest and should’ve ran there but we just didn’t get the strategy right. We were unlucky with cars pitting on the same lap and we got held up unfortunately. It was a fairly uneventful race from where I was. Between now and Darwin, I’m hoping to try and find some pace in the car and refresh.”

Shane van Gisbergen – Car #97
Qualifying Race 2 – Seventh (Fastest Time: 1:19.5088)
Race 2 – Second
Championship – Second (1,356 points)

As we said last night, we had to make some big changes to go well in qualifying, but that wasn’t to be as we just couldn’t hook it up and ended up seventh. During the race the car was fantastic again, it was fast and we had a good strategy and just tried to get as much clear air as we could. We had to split the strategies and car #1 chose to pit early, otherwise we would have and I thought it was the right way to go. It hurt us a little at the beginning, we dropped back a bit but in the middle stint I started to come back. Once we put the new tyres on, we just pushed hard.”

1500 The race in a nutshell; SVG and J-Dub split strategies which sees J-Dub make his first pit stop early, SVG hangs out as one of the last to pit which works in his favour as he makes his way up the field. These were his words when he passed Scotty McLaughlin to take P23:

1200 It’s the small things…

1050 Qualifying a little better on yesterday – SVG goes P7 and J-Dub just behind in P8.

0700 We’re looking to go one better and bring home the chocolates today. We’re also stoked for our team mate Lowndesy on his 650th career race today – a huge achievement for the legend.
