The Red Bull Racing Australia drivers fought their way to two top ten finishes in today’s races at the Australian Grand Prix.
Jamie and Craig, having started race one from ninth and 13th respectively, made up ground in the opening 12-lap sprint to finish sixth and ninth. The second race, which was shortened to 10 laps due to a delayed start and a safety car from a first lap incident, saw JDub move up a spot to fifth and Craig drop back to 11th initially, but claim a position to finish 10th after a last lap battle with Car No.99.
After a disappointing showing yesterday, Lowndesy was a lot more positive about the speed of the two Red Bull Holdens after today’s action: “We improved the car over the two races. We made some more changes over the break between race one and race two, which gave us the feeling we needed. We needed more turn, more drive off the corner, which the boys were able to do.
“We were stuck in a bit of traffic for most of the races, which is always difficult around here. We made steps forward with the car balance and speed, but of course we start the race tomorrow in the accumulated points position. Overall we’re really happy with the progression we’ve made with the car.”
Jamie was also happy with the gains made across the two races.
“We made up a few spots from qualifying, which is good,” he said. “It’s always pretty gnarly down into turn one with these rolling starts. The benefit I had in race two was that I was on the outside, therefore I could see the pole man and see when he accelerated. Now I think I’ll have to start behind the leader, so it’s more difficult to get a good start in that scenario.
“Race two was shortened, obviously the news was coming on, so we had to cut the race a few laps short, which was a shame. I would have liked to have done a few more, but we’re slowly improving the car and hopefully we can do a better job tomorrow.”
