Lowndesy hangs onto championship lead despite tough Winton

A pair of top ten results rounded out what was overall a pretty tough weekend for Red Bull Racing Australia in Winton.

Finding the ideal setup and getting to grips with the track were again issues that plagued the Red Bull Holdens, with qualifying producing a fifth-place start for this afternoon’s 200km race for Craig and 13th for Jamie.

“We survived and if that was our worst weekend for the year then we’d be happy,” said Lowndesy.

“Disappointing is the word that I think sums up the weekend. We didn’t quite get on top of the car setup so we struggled more than we expected. We made some pretty big changes from the car off the back of yesterday and it gave us a good direction but we still have a lot to learn from when we go through the data.

“A little frustrating but that’s motor racing – you get on with it and now we’ve got three weeks to prepare before New Zealand.”

Jamie agreed that it’s been a disappointing weekend for the team: “It’s tough coming off the back of Tasmania where we had a strong performance.

“We’ve got a lot to learn from this weekend and it just shows again how competitive the category is and how tight the competition is. If you miss the mark even a little bit you’re a long way down the pack.

“They say these moments make you stronger so hopefully that’s the case for Red Bull Racing Australia.”

The championship has had another shake up, but Craig heads into New Zealand still in the lead with 701 points, while Jamie has slipped to fifth on 606.

We’ll be back in action across the pond over ANZAC weekend for the ITM Auckland 500.
